Coal Loader
Coal Loader is a former industrial site located in the harbour front at Waverton. It features a unique exhibition space, accessed through the westernmost tunnel. This space reflects a strong post-industrial character.
The Coal Loader was developed in 1916, in response to the need for a coal depot in Waverton. In his poem, “The Sacrifice of Balls Head,” Henry Lawson expressed his concerns over plans to construct the coal depot. He lamented the loss of wildflowers and picnic parties.
For thousands of years, the Cammeraygal people inhabited the Waverton peninsula. By the late 19th century, coastal trade was well established. These trades relied heavily on the coal supply. Some of the most important customers were on Botany Bay and the Parramatta River.
