Acrobatics gymnasium

The first day of competition at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games saw Acrobatic Gymnastics (ACR) athletes take to the floor. The day’s program included four National Clubs’ Titles.

The first session saw Level 4 and 5 Pairs competing. Athletes performed floor and vault routines. This was followed by a Trio.

During the afternoon, the Women’s Artistic Level 7 group was in action. Competitors performed their Balance and Dynamic routines. At the end of the session, three Gold Awards were given out.

Today’s first session also featured the debut of Category Trios. This is a new feature at the Gold Coast Gymnastics Championships, and saw teams enter multiple groups to compete.

Team Adrenalin, the oldest gymnastics club in the city, entered multiple teams to compete. Their rendition of “The Greatest Showman” was a spectacular and impressive performance.

After the morning session, the first Senior International session got underway. Gymnasts from Australia’s best Senior International gymnasts competed for a spot on the plane to Doha in May. MAG’s top Senior International athletes were also competing, aiming for the final selection trial for Australia’s Men’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Team.

The morning session of the afternoon was a little lighter. Rhythmic Level 7 and 8 athletes finished their day’s competition. However, the Senior International session, which started at 1.30pm, will feature Australia’s top Gold Coast Commonwealth Games medallists.

There was also the Junior 11-16 Champion group. This session saw Kate Sayer, who is on the Australian Youth Olympic Team, compete.

The competition was a success for many of the competitors, as the clubs and gymnasts showed the true spirit of competition. As a result, the spoils of the session were shared amongst four different clubs.

Shire Gymnastics is a family-run centre in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. They won the overall title and the group title.

Results

If you’re a member of any of the top gymnastics clubs in Sydney, you’re likely to be looking forward to the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne later this year. The Championships are the first step towards competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. A total of 600 athletes from all over the state of NSW came together for the Senior State Championships, held at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre. There were Rio Olympians and top competitors from across Australia as well as interstate.

During the day, the competition continued in various gymnastics disciplines. In addition to Team All-around awards, a number of National Titles were awarded. Rhythmic Level 7 and 8 athletes were the last to compete. After completing their Combined routines, a number of Gold Awards were presented.

In the AeroSchools competition, Melbourne Girls’ College landed a second place overall. They achieved top results in the Intermediate and Senior divisions, while reaching podium positions in the Trio and Mixed Pair events.

The AeroDance Division 1 Intermediate Team and Division 2 Intermediate Team both reached podium positions. Their combined efforts earned them the title of AeroDance Team of the Year.

Mt St Michael’s College from Brisbane took the lead overnight, finishing first in the school category. Abbotsleigh School for Girls also won the title of Champion Overall School.

SXL Gymnastics was another leading club. Their senior squad performed in international age groups. Pippa Carnegie, Annabelle Dietrich, and Milli Thomsen all won gold medals.

ACR’s first session commenced in the morning. In the Aerobics session, back-to-back routines were held. During the afternoon session, the Women’s Trio competed. Throughout the day, six National Titles were shared among the competing schools.

The AeroSchools Australian Championships wrapped up with a celebration of wins in many different gymnastics disciplines. As the competition drew to a close, two Gold Medals were awarded for Dynamic and Balance.

Congratulations to all of the gymnasts who participated and to the dedicated judges. The competition was a huge success. It was also a great opportunity for competitors from across the state and country to meet each other.
